Adelaide Lee Everett Bloxton (related to Robert E. Lee, said daughter, Nell), b. 14 DEC 1886, Cartwright's Wharf, Nansemond County, VA (now Suffolk, Suffolk City, VA)- d. of a heart attack, 19 MAR 1950, in Home Ec. Dept. on campus of East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, where she worked and lived. (BLOXTON HOUSE; aka: "Adelaide E. Bloxton Home" there at ECU) Funeral Services at Christian Church (where they were married). Buried 23 MAR 1950 in Block F, Lot 107 (owned by her father, Elisha Everett), Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk, VA, where husband, William Moncure "Ashby" Bloxton, and most of her family are also buried (27 Everett's/47 Vaughans) (see cemetery website).

where her bridegroom was Principal of Driver School, she (of Driver) was married to Prof. Bloxton, and they had Elizabeth and Nellie Stuart before she was widowed.

Adelaide's parents: Elisha Lee Everett (1861-1929), son of Elisha Everett (13 DEC 1813 – 02 JUN 1890) and Eliza A. Everett (4 SEP 1820 – 24 JUN 1901), and Mary Elizabeth Sipe Everett (5 OCT 1860-17 MAR 1901), "daughter of E. Sipe." Adelaide oldest of 8 children.

Adelaide Everett Bloxton was born in 1886 in Driver, Nansemond County, Virginia; part of modern Suffolk City. She was the eldest daughter of eight children born to Elisha Lee and Mary Sipe Everett. After graduation from high school, she earned degrees from the College of William and Mary and the Teachers College at Columbia University. She completed additional studies at the University of Tennessee and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Her husband, William Moncure Ashby Bloxton, was a professor of English at the College of William and Mary. She taught in an area grade school, serving as a critic teacher of home economics and general science. The Bloxtons raised two children, Nell Stuart Bloxton and N.C. Bloxton Orrick. She was later employed at the Home Life School of Appomattox, Virginia. She also served as city supervisor and teacher of home economics in Danville, Virginia.

In 1928, Bloxton came to East Carolina Teachers College to serve as head of the Department of Home Economics. She played a major role in transforming home economics from a small department to one of the largest departments on campus at the time of her death. She also acted as the Dean of Women during the summer term of 1930. As a member of the college faculty, she served on many committees including the Policies Committee, the Committee for Alumni Homecoming Day, the Building Committee, and the Social Relations Committee.

An active participant in her church and various educational organizations, she held memberships in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the American Association of University Women, the Virginia Academy of Science, and the national and state educational and home economics associations.

On the evening on March 19, 1950, Bloxton fell ill. A doctor was summoned to the Home Management House on campus where she lived. Despite all efforts, she died of a heart attack shortly after his arrival. In 1952, construction began on a new home economics lab and classroom building. On February 26, 1953 the Adelaide E. Bloxton House was dedicated to her memory to train women in the domestic sciences.

Elizabeth Deal's memories of Adelaide Bloxton at ECU: "In the summers we'd go down to little Washington almost every Saturday and go swimming on the Pamlico and take a picnic. There was a public landing with a pier down there near Bayview. Mrs. Bloxton, who was in Home Economics, went with us when she was here in the summer. Everybody thought so much of her. She was always included. She was in our church and she and Mother were always good friends."

Namesake: Bloxton Adelaide E. Bloxton (1886-1950), native of Nansemond County, Virginia, was a B.S. undergraduate at the college of William and Mary, and a M.S. graduate at Columbia University. Bloxton also studied at the University of Tennessee and the University of North Carolina. Before coming to ECU, she was at one time connected with the Home Life School at Appomatox, Virginia and served as city supervisor and teacher of home economics at Danville, Virginia. She taught Home Economics at ECU (1927-1928) and then became the Director of the Department (1928-1950). In this capacity she was allowed to live in the Home Economics house, and it was here that she died in 1950. In addition to her duties as teacher and department chair, she acted as Dean of Women during the 1930 summer term and served on numerous committees.

Ledonia S. Wright was born January 5, 1930 and received her masters degree in education from Shaw University. She became an associate professor with the department of Community Health at ECU in 1974 while working on her Ph.D. in Education from UNC Chapel Hill. She was also the faculty advisor for the Society of United Liberal Students (S.O.U.L.S.) until her sudden death in 1976.

History: In 1952 a home management house was built for the Home Economics Department between Erwin and Garrett.

Bloxton House was dedicated on February 26, 1953. Bloxton House, along with Erwin Hall which was built just east of it, were constructed on the western campus. It was a wooded area at the time, located behind (the since demolished) Wilson Dormitory.

It is a simple two-sory brick structure, originally housing a training facility for Home Economic students. The building also housed the Center for Career Placement and, as of the late sixties, contains the Ledonia Wright African-American Culture Center, which hosts research & educational programs, as well as displaying African American art and Native American art. In 1976 it was rechristened the Ledonia S. Wright Cultural Center following the death of the popular and respected professor of Social Work, while still being called BLOXTON HOUSE.

Adelaide was the widow of William Moncure Ashby Bloxton, a Professor at William & Mary College. They were the parents of two daughters: Betty Dandridge Bloxton Orrick and Nellie "Nell" Stuart Bloxton. William was the son of William Arthur/Ashby Bloxton, born Oct 16, 1844 in Stafford County, VA and died at age 48 April 27, 1892 in New Kent County, VA, who was the son of William Ashby Bloxton & Lucy Clift Bloxton of Stafford County, VA.
