Mr. Deighton was born in Godmanshire?, England, Dec. 21, 1842 so he was nearly 83 years of age. His Mother was a widow and he with her and his Uncle and Aunt came to America when only three years old. They located first at Ft. Dodge, IA, but came to Fremont County in 1873 and he lived in Fremont and Page County ever since coming to Shenandoah about 27 years ago.
He served very efficiently on the police force in Shenandoah for many years and a night watch for the businessmen. His entire family died before him. A son was killed by an electric shock while employed as an electrician. His wife died Feb. 14, 1926, and his daughter, Miss Daisy on Jun. 8, 1930. After the death of his daughter, he continued to reside in the old home place 209 West Broad Street.
Mr. Deighton enlisted in Co. E, 19th, Iowa Infantry in 1861 and served gallantly through the Civil War. A military funeral will be held in his honor at the residence at 2:30 this afternoon, with Rev. W. S. Insley of the Presbyterian church preaching the sermon and paying tribute to his virtue as a soldier and citizen. Mr. Deighton is remembered kindly by all the people of Shenandoah for his standing as a citizen and a stern stickler for the observance of law. He is honored also because of the services to the community and state by his distinguished daughter, Miss Daisy who was councilmen at large for two terms and died suddenly while in the service of the city. Burnside Post, G.A.R. and the Women's Relief Corps had charge of the service at the grave, firing squad from Company E fired a volley over the grave and taps were sounded.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. F. Wood, Talmage, NE, were out of town relatives here for the services.
