Walt was a son of Austin O. Bugher and his wife, Dora B. Wheeler. Walt served in the US Army during World War I with the 308th Combat Engineers. He served in England and France. Walt married Lillie V. Feldner; a daughter of William F. Feldner and his wife, Clara C. Broome. Walt and Lillie were wed on July 11, 1919 in Pittsburgh (Allegheny County), Pennsylvania. They were blessed with two children; a son and a daughter. Walt was a barber by trade and owned his own shop for sixteen years. He was a thirty-second degree Mason and also a member of the American Legion in Lafayette, Indiana. Walt and Lillie were members of the First Baptist Church in Lafayette; he was serving as treasurer at the time of his death. Walt died of a heart attack.
