Gary was born to Alton and Peggy Phelps in the early winter of 1953. He spent his childhood and teenage years growing up with his older brother, Mike, in Waurika, and getting into much mischief. In fact, apart from building computers and other small electronics, his favorite pasttime seemed to be either creating mischief by the way of practical jokes, or telling the much loved and hilarious stories that stemmed from his many pranks.
After graduating Waurika High School in 1972, Gary spent a short time living in Los Angeles, California, before moving on to Albuquerque, New Mexico. There, he met his future wife, Susan Marie Boyce, and they were married in 1974. The year 1975 brought their daughter, Jennifer Lee. Their divorce occured in 1977, but Gary retained full custody of Jennifer and became a single father.
By this time, Gary had moved to Coffeyville, Kansas and started what would be his long career with Halliburton. There, he met his wife to be, Sharon "Sherry" Dean Bates, and after their marriage she legally adopted his daughter. The family lived in Coffeyville until 1982, when Gary was transferred through Halliburton back to Duncan and near his birthplace and old stomping grounds. Gary lived in Duncan until his death in 1995; both working for Halliburton for many years, and then later leaving to live his dream of owning his own computer company, OK Potential.
Gary had a wonderful sense of humor, always looked out for those around him, and will be deeply missed from now until we are all reunited with him once more.
