Wisconsin loses one of its pioneer citizens in the passing, recently, of Mrs. Doranda McDaniel Clark, who had reached the advanced age of more than 97 years. She was born in Pennsylvania on a farm which lay in both Pennsylvania and Maryland, the house standing on the line between the two states, Maryland being a slave state at this time.
When 12 years of age she, with her parents, moved to Ohio. On this trip the only wagon was so heavily loaded with the family's supplies that only the mother and younger members of the family could ride. Mrs. Clark, with some of the older members of the family, walked all the way. She often told of the beautiful setting sun as they reached the top of the Allegheny Mountains and looked upon the country west of the mountains.
They settled in Morgan County in Ohio. Here she grew to womanhood. There being 15 children in the family, she had eight brothers who served in the Civil War. Two of the brothers lost their lives in battle. Three of them were wounded and three of them came back untouched by war's destructive hand. Only one is living of all that family, Samuel McDaniel, who since the war has walked with crutches because of losing one of his limbs in battle. Mrs. Clark's husband was in training for six months during the war. At this time she did farm work and cared for her seven children. After the war, four more children were added to her family.
In 1873 she, with her family, came to Wisconsin and settled near Dell in Vernon County, where she lived continually for 53 years. At this time the nearest railroad station was at Sparta. It took them two days to make the trip of but 30 miles from Sparta to Dell where they purchased 160 acres of land of $600. This seemed to be an enormous price for the land, but as the father was a cooper, he, with the older boys, manufactured on the farm enough pork barrels to more than pay for the entire farm the first year. The barrels were hauled to La Crosse 40 miles away. It took four days to make one trip to La Crosse and back.
Mrs. Clark probably had the largest number of descendants of anyone living in the United States, 260 in all--11 children, 54 grandchildren, 171 great-grandchildren, and 24 great-great-grandchildren. She had a remarkable memory, was really a living history, and was loved by all that knew her.
