Joel was a twin with Amos Strong, sons of Eleazer & Jemima Stiles Strong, born the 1st of May, 1733, according to the Vital Records of Hebron, CT, vol. 1, pg. 14.

It is now presumed that Joel married Sarah Loveland at an unknown date. He certainly is not the Joel Strong, son of John & Lucretia Crouch Strong, who married Eunice Bascom, the daughter of Daniel & Mary Bliss Bascom, & removed from CT to Thetford, Vermont. Please see the essay entitled, Eunice Bascom: A Tale of Two Husbands., found in the Family Search family tree in the profile of Joel Strong, id LZ42-R53 (no longer available).

He is also not the Joel Strong, born the 1st of September, 1736, the son of Nathaniel Strong Jr. & Miriam Sheldon, who married Sarah Hanchett, the daughter of Samuel Hanchett & Eunice Judd, who was born the 1st of October, 1742. (The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong, by Benjamin W. Dwight, Vol. 2, pg. 1138; The Hanchett Family, by Junius Tilden Hanchett, pgs. 25-27.) This Joel & Sarah Hanchett Strong were of Northampton, Hampshire County, MA, as is clearly stated in the Will of Eunice Judd Hanchett, dated the 10th of May, 1770:

"I give devise and bequeath to my only Daughter Sarah the Wife of Mr. Joel Strong of Northampton..."

And further, in the bond of administration for Eunice's estate, dated the 6th of January, 1795, it states:

"Know all Men by these Presents, That we Joel Strong of Northampton & Sarah Strong both of Northampton...." (Hampshire County, MA, Probate Papers, Box 66, Estate 44, Eunice Hanchet, Westfield, 1795.)

Joel, son of Eleazer & his wife Sarah Loveland, were of Granville from at least 1775 to their deaths, never at Northampton, which is some 30 to 35 miles away. (Granville Town Records, Vol. 1, pg. 158.)

Sarah Hanchett Strong of Northampton supposedly died in 1799, as Joel Strong marries 2nd, Peggy Loomis, the 27th of March, 1800. (Vital Records of Northampton, MA, Vol. 1, 1654 to 1844, pg. 131.) Sarah Loveland Strong of Granville, died a full 16 years later. (See her attached memorial.)

The marriage date of Joel Strong & Sarah Loveland has not been found, but was probably in Connecticut, circa 1753, which is derived from the birth year of Sarah, their daughter.

His death is recorded in the Vital Records of Granville, MA, pg. 228.

Three of the children of Joel & Sarah, namely, Jemima, Ruth & Eleazer, can be found in the original town records of Westfield, Hampden, MA, vol. 1, pg. 49. The other children, Sarah, Elizabeth, Irene & Joel Jr., have no known birth record, but, as with the first three, are found in The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong of Northampton, MA, Vol. 2, pg. 830, by Benjamin Dwight.

Please note: This is the genealogy which incorrectly states that Joel's wife was Eunice Bascom. The Bascom genealogy also gets details incorrect, but the Strong genealogy is more egregious.

Known children of Joel & Sarah:

- Elizabeth, b. unknown.
- Sarah, b.c. 1754, probably, CT, married Stephen Bancroft/Bancraft at an unknown date, removed to Wayne County, New York, & she died the 21st of January, 1837 at Walworth, Wayne, NY.
- Joel Jr., b.c. 1757, probably, CT, married Elizabeth Loveland (probate records of her father, Robert) at an unknown date & died the 9th of July, 1813, at Granville, MA.
- Irene, b. unknown.
- Jemima, b. the 13th Nov., 1760, recorded at Westfield, MA, married William Carnahan in December, 1783 at Blanford, Hampden, MA.
- Ruth, b. the 15th, Mar., 1762, recorded at Westfield, MA, married Alexander Phillips, 20th Oct. 1785, at Granville, MA, removed to Canajoharie, Montgomery, New York & probably died there. Children of Alexander & Ruth Phillips: Ireaney (after her aunt & grand aunt), 1786; Eri, 1788; Selina, 1790; Harvey, 1792; Joel (after his grandfather), 1794; Franklyn, 1796; Alexander, 1798. NOTE: Ruth did NOT marry Matthew Dunham. The Ruth who married Matthew Dunham was of Berkshire County, where they married in 1780 &, as stated above, the present Ruth married Alexander in Granville, home of Joel & Sarah, she names a son Joel, after her father & names a daughter, Ireaney for her aunt & grand aunt.
- Eleazer, b. the 26th Sept., 1763, recorded at Westfield, MA, died, 15th of June, 1853, Granville, MA.

Joel was a private in the French & Indian War. This from French & Indian War service, from Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society, Vol. IX, pgs. 223-224:

Militia Co., under Capt. Solomon Buel, August, 1757, Joel Strong, private, 17 days of service.

Joel was also in the Revolutionary War with the rank of Sergeant. From Massachusetts Soldiers & Sailors of the Revolutionary War, Vol. 15, pg. 193:

"STRONG, JOEL, Sergeant, Capt. Solomon Brown's co., Col. Elisha Porter's (Hampshire Co.) regt.; engaged July 31, 1779; discharged Sept. 1, 1779; service 1 mo. 6 days, at New London, Conn., including 4 days (87 miles) travel home."

Unfortunately, the D.A.R. & the S.A.R. have Eunice Bascom as Joel's wife &, as noted earlier, this is incorrect. His wife was Sarah, now presumed, Sarah Loveland.
