Ray was born Jan. 1, 1912, at Inola, Okla., to the late John and Bertha (Igo) Burton. Ray lived his childhood in Doniphan County, Kan.
Ray was engaged in farming and worked as an operating engineer for Holliday Sand Company, St. Joseph, for 45 years.
On Nov. 26, 1933, Ray married Esther Rapue and they later divorced.
On June 9, 1973, he married Martha (Neudorff) Drannan and she survives of the home. Martha is the daughter of Herbert Arnold Neudorff and Martha Augusta Nash.
Ray attended Maxwell Heights Presbyterian Church; was a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 101 and their retirees club where he had served as president for four years; Eagles Lodge No. 49 and the former Moose Lodge.
Ray was also preceded in death by brothers, Harold and Howard Burton; sisters, Maetta Dalton, Doris Gabriel, Edith Tracy and Kathryn Fisher; children, Ray Burton Jr. and Betty Rigby; and stepson, Thomas Drannan.
Additional survivors: daughters, Billie Hahn, Colleen Jacobs and Doris Ellen Stobaugh, all of St. Joseph; stepchildren, Jim Drannan, Bremerton, Wash., John Drannan, Hamel, Ill., Martha Clark and Dan Drannan, of St. Joseph; brother, John Burton, Tennessee; sister, Virginia Stalder, Atchison, Kan.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Ray was a kind and gentle man who gave his heart and soul to his wife and family and he loved to dance.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at Gladden-Stamey Chapel, with Rev. Bill Bridgewater officiating. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation and family receiving hours: 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
