In addition to his career as lead singer of Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns, he was signed by the Milwaukee Braves in 1954 to play baseball. He made his major league debut in 1959 and was an outfielder in the major leagues for 13 years with the Milwaukee Braves, Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators and Chicago White Sox. His lifetime batting average was .274, he hit 94 home runs and had 419 RBI's. His best year was with Milwaukee in 1964 when he hit .304 with 10 HR and 74 RBI. He led the National League that year with 44 doubles.
