Jesse Marion Bell, 90, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at Betty Dare Good Samaritan Nursing Center.
Marion was born Aug. 4, 1915, in Bluewater Canyon, Otero County. He was the oldest of six children born to Jesse Parker Bell and Mary (Moffett) Bell. He graduated form Weed School in 1934. He considered himself a pioneer of Otero County, where he began and ended his long work career. In 1936 he married Edith Samuels of Carlsbad. From this marriage his two children were born in Carlsbad, where the family resided for many years. In 1953 Marion returned to Otero County and worked at Holloman Air Force Base prior to being selected as the first manager of the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce. In 1961 he entered the real estate and insurance business through his associates, Ted Bonnell and Frank Boyce. He continued his real estate career until his retirement in 2000.
Marion's passion was the history of Otero County, where his mother's father, George Moffett, mined near Orogrande. As manager of the chamber of commerce in 1956, he was tapped to travel with the Capitol Christmas Tree, harvested from the Lincoln National Forest, to Washington, D.C., to present the tree as a gift from the residents of Otero County to President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Marion served as the president of the New Mexico Association of Realtors in 1982, and was a past president of the Otero County Association of Realtors. He was an active Rotarian in the Alamogordo Rotary Club and, until his illness in December 2004, had a perfect attendance record of 49 years. During his membership he served as the club president and district governor, and twice received the distinction as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the Cuba Avenue Church of Christ; a founding member of the Alamogordo Country Club in the 1950s, as he had a passion for the game of golf; and was an active member of the Alamogordo Elks Lodge No. 1897, having been granted life membership in 2006 by the Past Exalted Rulers Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two younger brothers, Edwin Denny Bell and Joe B. Bell; his wife of approximately 20 years, Lois A. Bell, April 12, 1994; and a granddaughter, Staci Bell, the youngest daughter of Parker and Linda Bell, in 1980.
Survivors include his son G. Parker Bell and his wife Linda, of Las Cruces; his daughter Frances B. Wright her husband the Rev. James Wright, of Broadview, Ill.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Bell and his wife LaVona, of the family ranch in Bluewater Canyon, and Dalton Bell and his wife Doris, of Artesia; a sister, Mildred B. Samuels, of Carlsbad; and the extended family of his late wife Lois.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in the Cuba Avenue Church of Christ, 1300 Cuba Ave., with Tommy Ledbetter officiating.
Interment will follow in the Piñon Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Alamogordo Rotary Club and the Otero County Association of Realtors.
