Greenville (Texas) Morning Herald, Tue, 24 Jan 1933, page 1, Mrs. Brooks Passes Away, PIONEER HUNT COUNTY WOMAN DIES AT HOME IN JACOBIA COMMUNITY.

Mrs. S.J. Brooks, 80, pioneer Hunt County woman died at her home in the Jacobia community at 12:20 o'clock Monday morning, following an illness of four weeks duration.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the Old Concord Baptist Church at Jacobia, conducted by Rev. J.L. Truett, of Whitewright, assisted by Rev. S.D. Lindsey, of Greenville, and pastor of the Old Concord Baptist Church and Rev. A.W. Reaves, pastor of the First Baptist Church of this city.

Active pall bearers will be: G.A. Proctor, George Graham, (Continued on Page 6.) Ernest Haney, Emmett Waddle, Luther Skipworth and Walter Waddle.

Mrs. Brooks, nee Miss Phebe Ann Rambo, was born in Rome, Ga., on October 8, 1852. At the age of one year she came to Texas with her parents, John and Mary Rambo, who made the trip to this state in a covered wagon and were on the road for nine weeks. The family located first near Wolfe City and later removed to Quitman, in Wood County, where they resided for a short time and then returned to Wolfe City.

Mr. and Mrs. Brooks were married on Nov. 1, 1877, in Wolfe City. They resided there for two years and then located on the old home place in a territory which was at that time know as Jacobs Prairie, an unsettled section of this county. Mrs. Brooks had resided there since with the exception of about 15 years spent in Greenville.

Ms. Brooks was a devote wife and mother and gave practically her entire life to her family. She was always thoughtful of her loved ones and ready at all times to administer to their needs. She was one of the county's most beloved and highly re - was widely known and admired spected (sic) citizens, a woman who for her fineness of character, her benevolence and the many splendid acts where made her a wonderful woman.

She was a true Christian and for years had been a member of the Baptist Church. In early girlhood she professed faith in the Supreme Ruler and became a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church near Wolfe City where her membership remained until her death.

In the same spirit which she manifested when she accepted Christ her Saviour, Mrs. Brooks conducted her everyday life.
She considered it a joy and a privilege to accomplish even the least bit in behalf of Christianity and she was always found ready and willing to taker her share of any work that would be for the benefit of religion. Until declining years forbade she took an active part in church activities and performed a splendid service that will live as a monument to her.

Mrs. Brooks was a type of woman similar to the pioneers who made history. With energy and zeal she aided any worthwhile enterprise and gave her best efforts that they might be successful. She was kind and considerate of her fellow man, aided the distressed, administered to the ill and truly proved to be one of this sections most valuable citizens. She was a friend to all who knew her and her influence will long be beneficial.

She is survived by her husband, who is now in his 83rd year, and the following children: Fred Brooks, Jess Brooks, Robert Brooks and Mrs. O.B. Milner, of this city. She was preceded in death by three daughters, Mrs. A.C. Prather, Miss Esther Brooks and an infant daughter, Maud Brooks.

Two grandchildren, Robert Haney Brooks and Bush B. Prather, and a sister, Mrs. J.G. Gillespie, of Wolfe City, also survive.

Final rites were observed at 2:30 o’clock this afternoon for Mrs. S.J. Brooks, pioneer Hunt county woman who died at her home in the Jacobia community early Monday morning. The funeral services were held at the Old Concord Baptist church at Jacobia, conducted by the Rev. J.L. Truett of Whitewright, assisted by the Rev. S.D. Lindsey and Dr. A.W. Reaves of Greenville.

Active pall bearers were G.A. Proctor, Geo. Graham, Ernest Haney, Emmett Waddle, Luther Skipworth and WalterWaddle.

Many friends attended the services and the grave was piled high with floral offerings, attesting further to the high esteem in which Mrs. Brooks was held.
