"Old St. Paul's Cemetery" pamphlet, published by the St. Paul's Episcopal Church, p.6: Wealthy merchant assessed at $30,327; Battle of Monmouth

Daniel Bowley, a Private who served from Maryland in the Battle of Monmouth, NJ. In June 1778, the British took up a strong position near Monmouth Court House. Major General Charles Lee was given the command of Advance Corp by Washington and ordered to attack the British rear. After marching about five miles, Washington learned that Lee was in retreat. General Washington rode at once to Lee – and with strong language ordered Lee to reform his division and bring it to immediate action; which Lee promptly did. Washington then asked for an officer to lead a body to check the British advance. Lt. Col. Nathaniel Ramsey of the 3rd Maryland volunteered and held the enemy in check for about a half hour. With his sword still in his hand, Ramsey fell wounded and was taken prisoner.

In this battle, the British lost about 500 killed and many wounded. American losses amounted to 69 killed and 160 wounded. The British withdrew on June 29th but were too weak in numbers and their horses were too exhausted to engage in further combat. Daniel Bowley survived this battle and lived a long life finally dying in 1807 at the age of 63 and was buried here with his family.
