Herbert Baker took a break from plowing and lost his life. He was going fishing in the Catawba River with his sister and her husband. He climbed into a leaky boat which capsized, and though his brother-in-law tried desperately to save him, Herbert Baker was lost. He was 14 years old.
He was surived by his parents, McKinley Baker and Ruth Whitener Baker, five sisters, and seven brothers.
