Tuesday evening, December 30, about 6 p.m. word was received in Corning that Dan Mack, who had been in an Omaha hospital for five weeks, had passed away. While his death came as a great surprise to many, it was not altogether unexpected as his condition had been gradually growing worse the last few days of his illness.
For the past year or more Mr. Mack had not been in the best of health until on November 25, his condition became serious and he was immediately taken to Omaha where an operation was performed for the removal of an ulcer at the opening of the stomach. The operation was successful in every way and he rallied in fine shape until about two weeks ago pneumonia set in. His weakened condition was a handicap and he was unable to throw off the added burden of pneumonia. He passed away at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday.
Daniel Mack, son of Daniel Mack and Katheryn O'Day Mack, was born at Preemption, Mercer county, Ill., on March 10, 1867 and at the time of his death was aged 57 years, 9 months, and 20 days. His early days were spent on the farm and he received his early education in the rural schools, later, attending St. Ambrose college at Davenport. In September in the year 1893, Mr. Mack and Dudley Schaffer came to Corning from Preemption and established an implement business under the firm name of Schaffer and Mack. Later John Mack came to Corning and took over the Schaffer interests and the firm name became Mack Bros. This firm continued until the year 1911 when they sold to E. S. Clary, and John Mack took up the automobile business in the building known as the Mack opera house. Dan then took up the real estate and insurance business and was engaged in this line of work until his death.
September 29, 1908, he was married to Miss Mayme Gauthier of Corning. Four sons were born to this union. Twin sons, Daniel Raymond and Francis Augustus, were born August 12, 1910, but lived only a few months, Francis dying December 24, 1910, and Raymond passed away January 11, 1911. The two living sons are Edwin, aged 13 and Byron, aged 11.
The deceased is survived by seven brothers and one sister. The sister is Miss Elizabeth Mack, who with the brothers James and Michael, reside at Preemption, Ill., Joseph and Edward, Preemption, Ill., William Mack lives at Taylor Ridge, Ill., Thomas at Viola, Ill., Joseph and Edward reside at Lewistown, Mont., and John Mack of this city. All were present at the funeral with the exception of Edward of Lewistown, who was unable to be present.
In addition to the wife and two sons the brothers, and sister, he leaves many other relatives in different parts of Iowa and Illinois and a host of friends in this community will mourn his passing.
In the passing of Dan Mack the community loses one of its substantial and upright citizens. In all of the years that he has been in business in this community he has made many friends and his business judgment was always regarded with high respect. In the past few years he has been associated with the Hogan State Bank and was vice-president and one of the directors of that institution. Since the formation of the Federal Land Bank at Omaha Mr. Mack has been one of the appraisers for the land in various parts of this state and adjoining states where the bank placed their federal loans. He was also one of the stockholders of the Free Press Pub. Co.
The funeral services will be held today (Saturday) from the St. Patrick's Catholic church, conducted by Rev. Father Bernadine of Des Moines. Interment will be made in Calvary cemetery. The six brothers acted as pallbearers and this is an incident very seldom seen at a funeral.
