It is known that most of the land mass of Richmond National Cemetery is devoted to the re-internment of 5,691 unknown troups. All are marked by monuments saying Unknown U.S. Soldier, or two, three, four, depending on how many souls were placed in each grave. These burials were post-war removals from the cemetery at Belle Island Confederate Prison, the battlefields of Cold Harbor and Seven Pines, also Oakwood and Hollywood cemeteries in Richmond, and from various field burial locations in Chesterfield and Hanover counties, Virginia. These grave sites are guarded by four upright Civil War cannons. This memorial for Mr. Abbott is not supported by any onsite records, therefore if this soldier is buried here, he was buried as an unknown.
