William B. SMITH was an Apostle in the early church of the Mormons. He followed the members to Ohio, Missouri, and Nauvoo, Illinois. After the murder of his brothers, Joseph & Hyrum, in 1844 at Carthage IL, he broke with Brigham YOUNG who took most of the Mormons to Utah(Rocky Mt. Mormons). William moved to Wisconsin with wife(Eliza SANBORN d.1889IA)and later in 1858 Elkader IA. In later years(c1890) he helped found a small Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints(Hdqt. Independence MO – Prarie Mormons) at Osterdock IA at the site of Bethel Cemetery where he is buried which attracted our Winfry SMITH. Children included William(1857-), Edward(1866-), & May(1866-) m Perry BOLSINGER. May's daughter, Myrtle BOLSINGER-PORTWINE married Vernon SHAW and were parents of Vernon SHAW JR(d.1994). In 1972, Mary Scofield BELDEN wrote a paper at Luther College on William SMITH using information provided by a grand-daughter, Eliza PORTWINE(d.1974), of Osterdock IA - A copy can be found at the Elkader IA City Library.
One of his disciples(C B THOMAS) baptized Winfry SMITH at Osterdock.
