John Barstow was a famous aviator from Midland who took flying lessons from Orville Wright, and taught Charles Lindburgh some techniques for flying gliders. He worked for Dow Chemical Co., and helped develop the aeronautical applications of magnesium, called Dowmetal. The original Barstow Municipal Airport (formerly Midland Airport and now the location of Midland High School), the current airport completed in 1950, and a city owned nature preserve, Barstow Woods, are named for him.
