Mary A. Hannon was born in Washington County, Arkansas on 6 May 1847. She was the fifth of ten children born to Samuel C. and Frances Hannon. When she was 6 years old, Mary moved with her parents to Bell County, Texas. She was married twice.
Mary first married an unknown Whitten about 1867. He likely died between 1870 and 1873.

Mary married second to James Thomas Adams in Cameron, Milam County, Texas on 6 July 1873. This was his first marriage. James was born in Jackson County, Missouri and grew up in Grayson County, Texas. He served 4 years in Merrick's Texas Battalion during the Civil War.
They had five known children were:
1. Emma Theodosa ADAMS (b: August 01, 1875)
2. Edgar ADAMS (b: May 1880)
3. Edman ADAMS (b: May 1880)

Mary's daughter Mary Ellen Whitten married John H. Bradford in 1885 and had at least two children, Guy and Dora. After Mary Ellen died in 1896, Dora came to live with her grandmother Mary A. (Hannon) Adams and her step-grandfather James T. Adams. In 1900, Guy was 13 and was living as a boarder with a nearby family. Their father, John Bradford appears to have been living in Orange County, Texas working as a railroad laborer.
Immediately after her husband James died in February 1902, Mary applied for and was granted a Confederate Soldier's Widow's Pension. Mary was just 55 years old. She claimed in her application that her sole possession of any value was a mule. Also, that she was feeble and indigent.
By 1910, the widow Mary A. (Hannon) Adams had moved to Runnels County, Texas. Her granddaughter Dora Bradford married George Alderman that same year and moved in with Mary. Mary died in Runnels County in 1913 and her remains were returned to Milam County and buried in North Elm Cemetery beside her second husband, James Thomas Adams.
