MONDAY RITES FOR LEWIS CLYDE BURRISS
Funeral services were held Monday morning for Lewis Clyde Burriss, who died Dec. 29 in a Lakeport hospital following a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of Scotts Valley and was well-known pear orchardist and rancher throughout the county.
Burriss was born April 18, 1892, in Scotts Valley, one of four children of the late Bryan and Mattie Mitchell Burriss. His grandfather, Lewis C. Burriss, came to California, from South Carolina, in 1849. Several years later he went to Missouri, returning to this state the following year. In all he made four trips by covered wagon, serving as wagonmaster, and in 1856 he settled in Napa Valley with his bride, Sarah Johnson Burriss.
The following year, they moved to Sonoma County and in 1865 the family moved to Scotts Valley, where he took up a 440 acre government grant, which is still owned by the family and where six generations have made their home.
He was educated in the Lakeport schools and served in the 91st Division of the U. S. Army during World War I, seeing action at Muse Argonne, France, and the St. Mehiel Drive in Belgium.
He was a member of the Scotts Valley Fruit Exchange, serving as a member of the board of directors for many years; a member of the Lake County Farm Bureau, the Knights of Pythias and the American Legion.
Survivors include his widow, Margaret; three daughters, Mrs. Letty Ussery and Mrs. Adele Grothe, both of Lakeport and Mrs. Elva Knight of Bethel, Alaska; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Fraser of Modesto; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A brother, Clarence Pendy Burriss, preceded him in death in 1949.
Services were conducted under the auspices of American Legion Post 159 from the Jones Mortuary. Burial followed at Harley Cemetery.
