The case went cold for 26 years. In 2004, a priest was arrested and charged with the 1980 murder. On April 17, 2006, the Rev. Gerald Robinson went on trial accused of murder in the death of the nun. It is the first trial in United States history where a priest is charged with murdering a nun. April 6, 1980, would have been Sr. Pahl's 72nd birthday.
On May 11, 2006, Rev. Gerald Robinson was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the murder. He died on July 4, 2014, while serving his sentence at the Hocking Correctional Facility in Ohio. A new novel about the murder called "Sin,Shame and Secrets" was written in 2006 by Toledo Blade Religion Writer David Yonke. It is the only known case in US history where a priest was charged and convicted of murdering a nun.
