Author. He was a proletary writer, much influenced by Marcel Proust, James Joyce and William Faulkner. Member of the Swedish Academy for Literature from 1957, and receiver of the Nobel Prize in 1974. Among his vast production his most noted work is "Romanen om Olof" (1934-1937), an autobiographical novel, coloured by his poor childhood in the north of Sweden. His writings were distinguished by his engagement in freedom for the individual.
