Thelma M. Barnes, 84, Shelbyville, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at Major Hospital.

Born May 6, 1920, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of John A. and Gilda (Smith) Collins. She married Mansford Barnes on Aug. 30, 1941, and he preceded her in death on June 28, 1992.

Survivors include two sons, William D. Barnes and Timothy J. Barnes, both of Shelbyville; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and two granddaughters.

Mrs. Barnes was a homemaker and a poet. Several of her poems were published with various media.

She was a member of Vine Street United Methodist Church and International Federation of Poets.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Harvey Weaver officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
