Heather was a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Falcon Middle School when she vanished Sept. 17, 1991, from her Black Forest home off of Eastonville Road. Her mother had left the house at about 5:30 p.m. to take two of her sons to scouting and church activities. When she returned at 10:15 p.m., Heather was missing.
THE INVESTIGATION:
El Paso County Sheriff's deputies, FBI agents and a battalion of volunteers spent two years looking for Heather.
Just after her disappearance, more than 30 officers spent a week searching the area around the Church house. They turned up nothing.
The Friends of Heather Dawn Church Foundation was formed by several residents in October 1991 to keep the case in the public eye. They distributed fliers, held vigils and helped in subsequent searches for the girl.
On Aug. 1, 1992, some 300 volunteers scoured a 4-square-mile area around the Church house. A month later, authorities set up a roadblock and quizzed motorists in an effort to turn up clues. Heather's picture also was featured on direct-mail cards sent to more than 52 million homes.
THE DISCOVERY:
On a Monday in 1993, a hiker discovered a human skull near an old abandoned car off Rampart Range Road. Authorities at first thought the car and skull were related. That suspicion was ruled out by mid-week.
A jawbone was found Thursday near where the skull was found. On Friday - exactly two years after her disappearance - dental records were used to identify the remains of Heather.

She was a homicide victim. There is an episode of “Forensic Files” on HLN Channel “Screen Pass” (2008) which describes her life, and final days. “The 1991 disappearance of Black Forest Colo, teen Heather Dawn Church is recalled. Church’s remains were found 2 years later on a remote Colorado road. The victim’s neighbor, Robert Charles Browne, was convicted of the murder.”
