Officer William Shirley Buchanan was a member of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC.

Circumstance: While operating a motorcycle, Officer Buchanan responded to a "Man With a Gun" call, in a Code One status. When he reached the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Seventh Street, NW, the motorcycle struck a vehicle being operated by Mr. Fred Lanoir, of 914 H Street NE. broadside, causing instant death to Officer Buchanan. The crash occurred one block from the home of Officer Buchanan's fiancee.

Officer Buchanan's funeral was held at the family home, 835 Allison Street NW, on Monday, April 22, 1929, at 2 PM. He was survived by his parents, Robert E., and Loretta H. Buchanan, and family. He was interred at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery.
