Lewis Cooper's career as a cattleman took place on land acquired in 1906 by his grandfather's family: William (Bill) H. Cooper, his wife Elizabeth, and their adult children Cranford, Beatrice, Joseph, Herman and Eupha, in New Mexico Territory through the Homestead Act. The land was located north and east of the village of Kenna.

Lewis's father, Joseph (Joe) Cooper, and mother, Gertrude, made their home on the original homestead and over time bought most of the land that was originally claimed in 1906 by other members of the family. Lewis joined his father's ranching business.

Lewis married Lucille Martin in 1937. The couple had two daughters: Virginia Ann (Jenny) and Jacqulin (Jackie). They made their home on the ranch.

The family was active in community life in Kenna, NM and Elida, NM. Lewis was Sunday School Superintendent at the Kenna Community Church for many years.

Lewis died at age 55 in a tragic accident when his truck was hit head on by an oncoming vehicle west of Clovis, NM.
