Philip E. "Tip" Alwine, of New Oxford, entered into Heavenly rest March 13.
He was a son of the late Percy and Myrtle N. (Rohrbaugh) Alwine.
Mr. Alwine was a World War II army veteran, a former Boy Scout master, and served on the Conewago Valley School Board for over 20 years. He was also a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Oxford, New Oxford Lions Club, Hebron Lodge #465 of New Oxford, and the New Oxford Fire Company.
After finishing high school in 1932, Tip started working at Musselman's Jelly and Preserves Plant in Biglerville. He and his dear wife, Thelma, met at church through a mutual friend. They had their first date sprung on them unexpectedly the next day when their friend took them to Gettysburg and left them with her car.
"Tip" worked 44 years at the brickyard owned by his family, Alwine's Brickyard. He lit up New Oxford, with the Lions Club, when he used a truck from the brickyard to put Christmas lights up around town. He was also known for driving down to Florida to pick up the first batch of oranges for the New Oxford Lions Club holiday fruit sale.
Known to many in New Oxford as "Uncle Dudley", he retired from the fire company after more than 50 years of volunteering there. The company gave him the Retired Service Award in 1979, and he was named Man of the Year by the New Oxford Chamber of Commerce in 1981.
He is survived by his loving and precious wife, Thelma, and also surviving are one son, Douglas O. Alwine, of Weare, NH; three daughters, Alice E. Alwine, of Bay Shore, NY, Lois J. Kerr, of Crane, MT, and Joyce A. Eckhoff, of Savage, MT; four grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Anna Merchant, of FL and Phyllis Keller, of Greencastle.
