He is best known for being the umpire behind the plate when the New York Yankees' Don Larsen pitched his perfect game in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers. It marked the last time Pinelli called balls and strikes. He also umpired four All-Star Games (1937, 1941, 1950 and 1956) and five other World Series (1939, 1941, 1947, 1948 and 1952). He was an infielder with the Chicago White Sox in 1918, Detroit Tigers in 1920 and Cincinnati Reds in 1922-27, posting a .276 lifetime batting average. The right-handed hitter batted .305 in 1922 and .306 with 23 stolen bases in 1924 for the Reds.
