He was wounded and captured on August 28, 1862 at the Battle of Gainesville, Virginia or Brawner's Farm which was the first battle before the Second Manassas. This was one of the bloodiest battles of the war, and was fought by the 2nd Wisconsin of the Iron Brigade also called The "Black Hats" alone, only receiving aid after the heaviest of the fighting was over.
