James M. Clendenin is listed in the 1850 census for the 3rd ward, St. Louis County, MO, page 293, along with James H., John P., William A., and Ellen.
Note alternate birth date of 7 Apr 1796 given in the bible owned by Thomas Edgeworth Courtenay. This date was added retroactively to the Bible, which was printed in 1845, probably by Mildred's mother or father (James Moores!) so the error is puzzling, unless the transcript is in error.
In 1852 and again in 1855, James Moores, living in St. Louis, swore out notarized statements attesting to his service in the War of 1812, for the purpose of obtaining Bounty Land made available to veterans by an 1850 act of Congress. He states he enlisted in August 1814 as a private in a voluntary company of Infantry raised in Harford county, Maryland by Capt. James Rampley; and was discharged 24 days later, being several days after the Battle of North Point.
In 1856, James Moores sold his personal property to Thomas Edgeworth Courtenay for $3512 and sold his house in St. Louis (through an ad in the Missouri Democrat, with Thomas Edgeworth acting as his agent). I don't know why? Did he intend to settle his bounty land and become a farmer at the age of 59? Was he ill? Did he liquidate for his children's benefit and then go to live with them? This was 2 years after the death of his second wife.
