Deputy Sheriff Allen Bares was shot and killed at approximately 4:00 pm while investigating two suspicious men while off duty.
Deputy Bares was cutting grass when he observed the men crash their car into a ditch on South Hospital Drive. He called the sheriff's office to report the incident and suspicious activity, then approached them. As he did so one of the men drew a weapon and fatally shot him.
Responding deputies located Deputy Bares suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to Abbeville General Hosptial, where he succumbed to his wounds.
After shooting Deputy Bares, the two subjects stole his truck and fled the area. The truck was later located in Abbeville, and both subjects were arrested several hours later. They were subsequently charged with first degree murder.
Deputy Bares had served in law enforcement for 15 years. He had previously served with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 at a 1:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Allen Morris Bares, Jr., 51, who died Monday, June 23, 2014.
He will be laid to rest at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. The Celebrant of the mass will be Father William Blanda, the homilist will be Fr. Kenneth Mayne and Fr. Bill Melancon will preside at the cemetery service. Fr. Stephen Eugwa, Fr. Corey Campeaux, Fr. Conley Bertrand, Fr. Neil Petit, Fr. Scott Desormeaux, and Fr. Jose from Alexandria will be concelebrating. Deacon Bill Vincent, Allen's fellow officer and Godfather to his son James, will be leading the Cursillo rosary along with fellow Cursillo brothers and sisters. Pallbearers will be Brandon Alleman, David Trahan, Kirk Frith, Anthony Vice, Bryan Kibodeaux and Milton Mouton. Honorary pallbearers will be the Vermilion Parish Sheriff Deputies.
Allen Bares, Jr. died in selfless service to his community on June 23, 2014. He was born in Houma on October 7, 1962 and raised mostly in the Leblanc Community. He graduated from Erath High in 1982. His love of country music led him to his first career in music as a country music DJ at KROF/KASC as radio personality Mike Daniels. He met the love of his life Tina and they married in 1989. In 1993, the second love of his life was born, his daughter Amy. Thirteen years later God blessed them with their son, James. He had a calling for law enforcement all his life and began his career with the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office in January of 2002. He served both Iberia and Vermilion Parish where he formed a brotherhood with his fellow officers. He gave his life serving and doing what he loved until his final breath.
Allen was a devoted Catholic who was raised in a loving and spiritual home. He loved the Lord and was very blessed in the gift of faith. Allen had a big heart who would give his shirt off his back. There wasn't a stranger he didn't know and made his neighborhood his family. He loved to cook and entertain and blessed his family, neighbors and friends with his large gatherings. He had a wonderful personality and was a friend to everyone and had a smile that could light up a room. He could joke and charm his way into anyone's heart. His presence and spirit will live on forever in the cherished memories of everyone who had the privileged of meeting this hero. He will live on in his children and his fellow law enforcement brothers and sisters and will sit with our Lord and His mother Mary in eternal glory interceding for us all.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Tina; his daughter PFC Amy who he loved more than life itself. She serves our country in the U.S. National Guard, and his son, James, his buddy and his little man; his loving parents Allen Sr. and Lynn Bares, his sister, Claire and her husband Bill Pipes, and Brenda Bares; brother, Kenneth and his wife Melissa Bares. He also leaves behind his five Godchildren who he adored, Ashley Broussard, Drema Bares, Rachel Pipes, Mark Pipes and Gina Boullion; in-laws; numerous nieces and nephews; and cousins; and a large extended family who he loved to entertain.
He is preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Edier and Effie Bares; maternal grandparents, the former Mayor Jimmy Vorhoff and Mildred Vorhoff.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.; Friday, June 27, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. when they will depart for the church.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Fraternal Order of Police.
