Ellison M. Whiteaker Jr., 79, Yakima, Wash., and formerly of Bismarck, died Nov. 28, 1999. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Yakima. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Ore.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. today and Friday, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, all at Keith and Keith 9th Ave. Chapel.

He was born in Bismarck on Sept. 25, 1920, to Ellison M. Whiteaker Sr. and Elsie Caroline (Smith) Whiteaker. He attended the one-room Prarie (sic) Home School along with seven other students and a teacher through eighth grade, traveling four miles from home to school via saddle horse. He moved to Turner, Ore., in 1936 and completed high school and graduated from Oregon State University.

Whit served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater, joining the 78th Infantry Division of the First Army under General Bradley at the Remagen Bridgehead. He was discharged from active duty in 1946, but remained in the Army Reserve and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was married to Lorraine L. Rothenberg in Portland, Ore., on Aug. 18, 1951.

Whit was employed at North Pacific Canners and Packersin sales and marketing of canned and frozen fruits and vegetables from 1946 until 1972 when he joined Tree Top, Inc. as sales manager-Industrial Department and later as international sales manager, retiring in that position in 1986.

He became a manager of Mt. Scott Presbyterian Church in 1948. He and Lorraine joined Milwaukie Presbyterian Church in 1959 and while there he served on Session; was chairman of the Christian Education Committee, and instructor in the Sunday School until moving to Yakima in 1972. He has been a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church serving as clerk of Session and on numerous committees.

He was president of Southwest Rotary in 1980 and later served as secretary for 16 years. He was also active in Yakima Youth Baseball, serving as president for one term.

Whit was involved in the WSU County Extension Master Gardener program for many years. He enjoyed his family and had many interests including researching his family tree, working on his computer, gardening especially his roses, camping and later traveling with his wife and dog Ainsley in their motor home.

He liked making bread, watching Mariners games and working on crossword puzzles. His willingness to teach and share from his vast knowledge of history and current events along with his kindness and ability to "set things right" is his legacy. His trust was truly in the Lord and he will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and a granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or to the Ellison Whiteaker Education Fund in care of Keith and Keith Funeral Home.
