Dr. J. Fredrick Conrad died peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2003, at the Cloisters Convalescent Home in San Diego. He suffered the effects of Alzheimer's disease for several years. Fred was born in McHenry, Illinois, on January 26, 1916 to Josephine and Anthony Conrad.

At the age of ten, he and his family moved to San Diego where he later attended San Diego High School, San Diego State College, and The School of Dentistry at the University of California Medical Center at San Francisco where he graduated in 1938. He met and married Dorothea Daniels Conrad in 1940. They set up residence in San Diego where he began his practice.

He entered the US Navy during World War II. Between the years 1941 and 1945 he served as a Dental Officer at Santa Rosa Air Support Facility, aboard the USS Altair in the Philippines, and later at the Naval Training Center in San Diego. After the war he resumed his private practice of orthodontics until his retirement in 1989. Fred and Dorothea were happily married throughout this time and until her death in 1990.

Fred was an active member of the San Diego County Dental Society, the San Diego Crippled Children's Society, the San Diego Yacht Club, the Committee of 100 and past president of the University Club. He enjoyed supporting the San Diego Aeronautical Museum and the San Diego Crew Classic. Fred's passion in later years was the second home he and Dorothea maintained in Pine Hills where he was a Board Member of the Pine Hills Water Company.

In 1991, Fred married Margaret Ridout. She and her first husband Lionel U. Ridout were devoted friends of Fred and Dorothea. They enjoyed many years of friendship and numerous social occasions. Fred and Margaret felt fortunate to have found such a joyous second relationship. He is survived by his loving wife of the last 12 years, Margaret Ridout Conrad; by his three sons, Fred Conrad Jr., of Berkeley, California, Bernard Conrad of Grants Pass, Oregon, and Joseph Conrad of Bend, Oregon and their wives as well as Margaret's daughter, Susan Howard of San Diego and her husband Fred; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Fred Conrad was loved by many in the San Diego community. Even while living at The Cloisters the last few years of his life many recognized him as their friend and orthodontist. They would often stop to say hello and thank him for his kindness. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Nov 15, at 11am at All Souls Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to San Diego Hospice and Palliative Care (Attn. Foundation Dept) at 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego, Ca 92103 or the San Diego Children's Dental Health Center (Attn. Treasurer) at 1270 24th Street, San Diego, Ca 92102 in his memory.
