James came to Hempstead Co., AR about 1853 with his father and brothers and all are shown as having original land purchases in Township 13, Range 23, which is located just southeast of present day Hope, AR. James enlisted in the C.S.A. at Centerville, AR on Feb. 26, 1862. James Galloway, served in Co."C", 20th Arkansas Infantry, during the Vicksburg campaign. He was wounded and captured at the battle of Champions Hill (Bakers Creek) near Raymond,Ms. on May 16, 1863. His brothers John (buried at Hall Cem.) and Jobe F. Galloway (buried at Shover Sprgs. Cem.) served in the same unit.
