John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren
[Add A Photo]
Union Admiral John A. Dahlgren, who spent 16 years at the Bureau of Ordnance, was the inventor of the "Dahlgren gun." This naval cannon, which was called a "soda-bottle gun" because a narrow barrel and thick breech gave it the look of a cast-iron flagon, proved so effective in sea battles that one naval historian has called it the weapon that won the Civil War. Photo courtesy of the Library of Congress, and featured in a set of U.S. History books published in 1963 by LIFE magazine which were about to be tossed in the garbage by the local library.
