Francis was the son of Clyde Yeaw and Minnie Yorks Yeaw. Minnie's sister Clara adopted Francis when he was 5 years old.

He married Margaret Clapp on June 6, 1923 and they lived in Des Moines while he served overseas in France. They moved to Ames upon his return from service.

His sons followed their father's footsteps into the service of their country. Archie enlisted in the Navy, Earl served in the Army and Leonard joined the Marines.
