He started the Bechdel Family funeral home business in about 1899. He was born in Liberty Township and ran a livery stable. The local carpenter was also the mortician and needed Edgar's services often due to the livery. He was first married to Margaret "Hattie" Decker, She died just three weeks after they were married. He then met and married Maude Heberling in Eagleville, now Blanchard Centre County, Pa. Her father Joseph Heberling was a Station manager for the Pennsylvania Railroad and had been moved from Penna Furnace to Eagleville, near Howard. Joe Heberling was then called back to Pennsyvania Furnace and it was there that they were married beneath the large archway that was decorated. Edgar Farmed, ran an auction at Mill Hall, Pa. and started Bechdel Funeral Home. He and Maude raised a family of twelve children having Glenn, the youngest late in life.

Bechdel--J. Edgar Bechdel, well known funeral director at Blanchard, died on Tuesday morning, following an illness of several years, during which time he submitted to several major operations. He was a son of William and Matilda Snyder Bechdel,and was born at Blanchard 62 years ago. He married Maude Heberling, of Ferguson township, who survives with the following children: Mrs. Harry F. Jones,of Bellefonte; Claude and William Bechdel, of Beech Creek; Mrs. T. Max Hall, of South Williamsport; Mrs. Merle Smith, of Cleveland, Ohio; Thompson Bechdel, of Rehobeth Beach, Del.; Donald, Robert, Max and Glenn, all of Blanchard. One sister also survives, Miss Anna Bechdel, of Blanchard. He was a member of the Methodist church, the Beech Creek Grange, I.O.O.F., and P.O.S. of A. of Blanchard.
