Hyrum died while on a mission to South Carolina. He was beaten with a harness tug by a mob. He recovered but in a weakened condition contracted malarie and died. His body was sent back to Utah for burial under direction of Heber Kimball head of the Southern States.
The Kimball family was of some relationship to the Carter family.

Later (about ten years) a younger (half) brother, son of Samuel Carter went with a fellow missionary to the same area, came back reporting a succesful mission with some conversions.

Information from Larry Easterday a grandson of Heber Carter, a brother to Hyrum.
