US Congressman. He moved to New York City in 1880 and engaged in journalism. He was the active editor of the Flushing Times (1883-84), member of the editorial staff of the New York Tribune, (1884-94) and editor in chief of the New York Press. In 1894, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John R. Fellows, then reelected to the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1899. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1903 and practiced law until his death age 56.
