Lillian Gaither Atwell "Li", 87, a resident of Annapolis since 2006 and formerly of Mayo, died March 24 at Sunrise Assisted Living. Born January 11, 1927 in Mayo to the late Lyle W. and Marguerite Gaither, Mrs. Atwell graduated from Annapolis High School in 1944. She was a USNA Civilian Personnel Office employee for 30 years and retired in 1974 under the name of Lillian Henry. Mrs. Atwell was a member of the Mayo Methodist Church , Charter member of the Mayo American Legion Auxiliary, and Ladies of Elks #622. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, dancing, animals and helping others. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Atwell is preceded in death by her first husband, James Henry whom she married February 22, 1947, divorced in 1961 and who died in 1989; second husband, Charles R. Atwell, whom she married July 15, 1979 and who died in 1991; sister Helen Gaither, who died in 1935; grandparents, Henry and Agnes Behlke and William and Mary Gaither; and cousins, Charles and Fred Behlke. She is survived by two cousins, Norma Behlke and Charlene Opel, both of Mayo. Friends and family may call from 3 to 6 p.m., Friday, March 28 at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, Inc., 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis. A Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 29 at Mayo UMC, 1005 Turkey Point Road, Mayo. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rude Ranch Animal Rescue, 3200 Ivy Way, Harwood, MD 20776 or to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD 21122.
