John injured his hand in a wheat thresher when he was a young man. Neighbors took him to the hospital in Cumming and doctors were about to amputate his hand. His father Absalom rushed by horse and buggy to the hospital and arrived just in time to stop them, saying he had seen worse injuries while he was in the war (Civil War) and they had healed. John's hand did heal and he had only a scar.
