Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Zaragoza, José María Bueno y Monreal entered seminary in Madrid in 1914. Earning a scholarship, he moved to Rome in order to pursue his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Back in Spain, he frequented the University of Madrid, obtaining across the years doctorates in theology and canon law along with a licentiate in law. Ordained priest in Rome in March 1927, he lectured ecclesiastical public law at the Instituto Central de Cultura Superior Religiosa in Madrid from 1923 until his episcopal nomination in 1945, and from 1927 up to the same period lectured theology, canon law and moral theology at the Seminary of Madrid. Appointed bishop of the diocese of Jaca, he received his episcopal consecration on March 19, 1946 in Madrid. Transferred to the see of Vitoria in 1950, he was named coadjutor with right of succession of the metropolitan see of Seville in 1954 and promoted to titular archbishopric see of Antiochia di Pisidia. Apostolic administrator "sede plena" of Seville, he succeeded to the archbishopric on April 8, 1957 following the death of Cardinal Pedro Segura y Sáenz. Pope John XXIII created him cardinal priest in his first consistory of December 15, 1958 with the title of Ss. Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia. Decorated with various distinctions through the years, along his episcopate toiled for the set up of the Seminario Menor de Pilas. Vice president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference between 1972 and 1978, the Cardinal retired from office in 1982 and passed away of heart failure following a long history of frail health at the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra of Pamplona. His body was interred in the cathedral of Seville, where in 1995 a funerary monument, sculpted by José Antonio Márquez was erected in his memory.
