When Susan CHANEY was born November 5, 1860, an era of an interesting life began. Through childhood and early girlhood she possessed a burning desire to do things and achieve something.
She prepared herself for a schoolteacher and there are many of her former pupils living today, who will hear with deep sorrow and regret the news of her passing. She had lived to see many of the boys and girls whom she taught to read and write, make a name for themselves. This gave her great pride and joy.
She will be remembered by many as a young married woman riding miles on horseback to render the service of a school ma’am, and returning after the school day was over to her own home and babies to give an even greater service of motherhood.
Her undaunted courage, her love of schoolwork, coupled with brant health and ambition made possible her public service for many years.
Rather early in life she was married to Wesley M. HATFIELD, who passed away in Los Angeles in 1925. To them were born seven children, five of whom are living: Harvey D., Marshall Roe and Julius Ray are all established in Los Angeles. N. Frank is in Danville, Illinois. One daughter, Helen, has a responsible position with the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Los Angeles, a place she has held for many years.
With her children and grandchildren around her, she spent her last years in her own home in Los Angeles with every possible comfort, happiness and contentment.
Her funeral was held in “The Little Church of the Flowers,” near Glendale, a place noted for its simplicity and dignity. Within its walls, were growing plants and singing birds are ever present, many celebrities of the movie colony have been paid their last respects and innumerable weddings have been performed.
So, with just a touch of the same courage and glamour with which Susie met all life’s situations, her book of life closed and she was laid to rest in Forest Lawn Cemetery, February 19, 1935, at the side of her husband, Wesley M. HATFIELD.
