Obituary - Elmer J. Shinn

Elmer J. Shinn, whose death occurred at Princeton, N. J., on January 6, was born at Pointville, ,N. J. He learned the plumbing and heating business with George D. Worrell, of Mount Holly, N. J. By conscientious work and a desire to learn, he in time became foreman of the heating department. His work being done with intelligence and with a view to its being satisfactory to the customer, his services were much in demand by patrons of the business. In 1900 he came to Newtown as a partner of J. Wilmer Lundy, purchasing the business carried on for many years by Franklin Smith at 26 South State Street. He did not remain long in Newtown. The unusual opportunity for business at Princeton presenting itself, the firm of Worrell, Shinn & Co., was established there in the spring of 1901, and has been eminently successful. The partnership at Newtown was dissolved in 1907. In 1911 Mr. Shinn purchased the interest of the remaining Princeton partner. Mr. Worrell and had conducted the business by himself ever since. He was prominently identified with a number of commercial and philanthropic enterprises of Princeton, and gave especial care to the music in the Second Presbyterian Church. He was quite active in Liberty Loan and Red Cross drives, and was never too busy to engage in any effort for the good of the town. For a number of years he was a member of (the Borough) council, (including Supervisor of the Sewer Committee) and at his death was a member of the school board. His genial personality and faithfulness to his friends endeared him to those who came in contact with him, and his untimely death will be mourned by a large circle of friends. His death resulted from complications following an attack of influenza. He is survived by his father, a brother and two sisters. The funeral took place on January 9 from the Second Presbyterian Church of Princeton, with interment at the Baptist cemetery at Mount Holly. He was nearly 46 years of age.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Princeton, and sang in the choir of the Second Presbyterian Church. He was the vice-chairman of the wartime Red Cross Drive, a mason, Nassau Lodge 106, IOOF, Jr OFAM, member and trustee of the Nassau Club. He served on the Borough Council and the Liberty Loan Committee. He lived at 264 Nassau Street in Princeton, with his sisters Anna and May. He travelled abroad, he was interested in music, nature and civic activities. He died of influenza at Princeton Jan 8, 1919. He is interred in the family plot at The Baptist Cemetery (aka St Andrews Cemetery) in Mt. Holly, NJ. Elmer never married.
