The Black Turken.

She's who's my avatar on here, despite what the name suggests she wasn't really a chicken-turkey cross. She was a Transylvanian naked neck chicken, my sister got her from a poultry supplier as a day old chickie, one of 2 that were in the box of 25 mixed brown egg layers. We were all so impressed at the pair of them, one fuzzy brown and the other a fluffy black poof. The dinosaurian look to the bare neck, and how the soft skin feels is wild, like velvet or silk on a hot water bottle. Despite having a bare neck, and bottom, and less feathers than most breeds, turkens are cold hardy and tough, she'd stomp right out in the snow like Godzilla smiting Tokyo, leading the charge of the chicken brigade. The Black Turken was especially tough, she didn't take crap from anyone.

As the chicks grew up she came to totally dominate them and came to be the dominant hen. She would be the most aggressive for food, the best spot to rest, the nicest place for a dust bath; she would march right over and peck other chickens just to move them out of the way, stand there a moment, then wander off, apparently just because she was top hen and that's how she rolled.

The Black Turken never was called anything but that, and somehow that fit her right. What other names could there be? The Black Turken just covered it, she would remain top chicken for about 6 years, holding her throne in iron talons until she died.

You can see the little red goggles on her face, those are chicken blinders, so that she wouldn't be able to see so well right in front of her because she was determined to pick at the other chickens' feathers. Most people would get rid of a picker, but she was so awesome she got a pair of spiffy blinkers instead.

Pretty much unafraid of anything or anyone, she would come up whenever people showed up at the house to see what they were up to, and of course hoping for a handout. This was pretty great when the person hadn't ever seen a naked neck chicken, the reaction was always "Oh my God! What is wrong with that chicken!" It didn't help when she'd stare at you with her head cocked up like a velociraptor debating if you're delicious or not.

Often she was found in the company of K, who was the second in the pecking order. They were both clever, if you had a shovel they came running because they knew you'd likely be turning dirt and they were hoping to get worms. If you'd be walking out toward the maple tree then the two of them might beat you there in the hopes of bread. The Black Turken was funny, she had a big personality and like all chickens led a very intense personal life.
