Holland Lewis Bennett, 1022 S. State Ave., a lifelong resident of Stephenson County, died in a hospital at East Moline Thursday after an extended illness. He was familiarly known as "Hollie."
He was born in Harlem Township in 1885, the son of Charles and Mathilda Bennett and was educated in rural schools and Brown's Business College. For 12 years he operated a store in Scioto Mills, later being in the automobile business in Freeport for 20 years. For 10 years before his retirement in 1957 he was employed as a machinist by Fairbanks, Morse & Co.
Bennett was a member of Excelsior Lodge, Freeport Chapter Royal Arch Masons, Freeport Commandery, White Shrine, and Eastern Star.
His marriage to Alma L. Zimmerman took place April 22, 1908. Survivors include his wife; a son, Donald C., Cedarville; two grandhildren; two brothers, Lynn L. and Weldon S., Scioto Mills, and one sister, Mrs. Harold Zimmerman, Cedarville.
Service will be in the Walker Mortuary at 3 p.m. Saturday, Rev. Wesley E. McKelvey, pastor of Embury Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary. A memorial has been established for the Masonic scholarship fund.
