born October 19, 1910, to Hans
Christian Peterson and to Ida Bell
Crone on a homestead two miles north
and one mile east of Marathon.
At the age of one he moved with
his family to Cumberland, WI, for a
short time. They returned to Marathon
in 1918, and purchased the homestead
on which Wilbur had been born.
He attended school in Marathon
where he completed the tenth grade.
At the age of 15, he quit school to
assist his father (who had become ill)
in managing the farm.
Wilbur was united in marriage to
Fern Angeline Martin, daughter of
Romeo Gibson Martin and Rose Ellen
McTagert of Rembramdt, on August 26,
1937. To this union four children were
born.
He served for a short time with the
Rock Island Railroad Company in
1936, shoveling snow for the engines.
He farmed the 160-acre homestead
from 1937 until his retirement In 1969.
He also performed custom farming off
and on during those years.
Wilbur served as a steward of the
United Methodist Church, Marathon,
and was a member of the Laurens-
Marathon Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed
dancing, playing cards, fishing, reading
and visiting with friends and
neighbors. He also treasured time
spent with his 11 grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
