Ruth E. Brown, 89, of Butler passed away Saturday at the Chicora Medical Center.
Born in Butler on Oct. 5, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Alice McAndrew Gallagher.
She was a telephone operator at the former Deshon Hospital during World War II. She also was the first woman to run for Butler City Council.
She was a former member of the St. Peter Roman Catholic Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Alice Ellis and her husband, John William Ellis III, of Norfolk, Va., and Barbara Fleske and her husband, Christopher, of Butler; her sister, Joyce Matuke of Butler; her four grandchildren, John William Ellis IV, Jason Matthew Ellis, Elizabeth Fleske and Nickolas Fleske, and one great-grandson, Logan Ellis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Brown, who passed away Jan. 21, 1994, and her two sisters, Margaret Fabrizzi and Gayle Higgins.
BROWN - The friends of Ruth E. Brown, who passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, will be received at the Martin Funeral Home, Inc., 429 Center Ave., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 432 Center Ave., Butler. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Burial Estates.
The Bereavement Group of the St. Michael the Archangel Parish will meet at the funeral home at 3 p.m. Wednesday to conduct a Scriptural Wake Service.
