MARY W. HOWE Dies at Home At Age of 87
Mrs. Mary W. Howe, 87, died at her home on the Rome Oneida road today at 8 a.m. She suffered bone fracture about two and a half years ago and has been ailing since.
Mary Wheeler Howe was born in the Old Wheeler homestead at Greenway in the Town of Rome on Aug. 22, 1864, daughter of the late George I. And Hannah Barker Wheeler.
In March, 1896, she was married to Joel T. Howe in the homestead. Mr. Howe operated farms in the vicinity Greenway except for 10 years when he was Deputy superintendent of Charities of Oneida County and superintendent of the Oneida County Home.
They lived at the home during those years, and Mrs. Howe was the matron there. Prior to her marriage, she taught school in the Hatch's Corners School.
After the death of Mr. Howe on May 19, 1932, she continued her residence on the Rome-Oneida Road, where her son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Roy Salm, lived with her.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Roy M. Salm, Mrs. Clarence G. Bradt, Ithaca, a sister, Mrs. Charles C. Howe of Rome and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred B. Wheeler of Greenway. There are five grandchildren, Royann, Constance, and Nancy Salm, Robert and J. Herbert Bradt. Besides several nieces and nephews, is a cousin, Miss Nora Greene, Rome. An only son. George R. Howe died several years ago at the age of 10.
