In the 1920 census for Houston County, Georgia, he is listed as an accountant for a warehouse. 1930 has him listed as a retail merchant with a grocery store and meat market. In 1940, he is listed as a proprietor of a retail livery & something else that I can not read but may be meat stock (Meat market?). He is not a veteran.

Funeral of E.F. Barfield
Funeral services for Edgar Francis Barfield, well known merchant of Perry were held Friday at the Perry Methodist church. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Perry, with the Masonic Lodge in charge.
He was stricken Monday night, Sept. 6, with a heart attack and passed away Wednesday p.m. at a Macon hospital where he was carried Tuesday morning.
Funeral was attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers listed plus the members of the Houston Lodge No. 35 F. and A.M. and of the Men's Bible class formed an honorary escort.
Survivors are wife, one son, William Edgar; his mother, Mrs. A.F. Barfield, and four sisters, Mrs. A.H. Boykin, Mrs. J.B. Bearden and Mrs. Issie Burch, all of Fitzgerald, and Mrs. M.J. Sapp, Atlanta; two nieces and two nephews.
He was born in Houston county March 18, 1888 and had lived here all his life. He married Miss Pauline Williams of Sycamore on Sept. 13, 1916. He had been in the grocery business here for 23 years.
He was a trustee of the Perry Methodist church and a faithful and loyal member.
The community has lost a good citizen in the passing of Mr. Barfield.
