Sula was named after her paternal grandmother. She was the daughter of George and Clara Burks. Her brother was JD Burks. She met an untimely death in an auto accident (age 16), on the way to Fairview High School's football game. Her boyfriend Paul, who drove the car, never got over it. He moved away to AZ, where he married and had a family, but he never forgot her.
