Kansas Governor. After working as a farmer in his youth, he moved to Kansas and launched a successful wholesale business. Entering politics, he served as a member of the Kansas House of Representatives, (1861-62). In 1862, he was elected as a Republican the 2nd Governor of Kansas, serving until 1865. As Governor, he devoted his efforts to developing the state and addressing the issues caused by the Civil War. After his term, he was Mayor of Leavenworth, Kansas, (1865-66) was founder of the First National Bank of Leavenworth and served as Director of the Lawrence and Fort Gibson Railroad Company. He also continued in business venues until his death at age 63.
